Work has moved forward on transforming Bristol's historic brewery buildings at Finzels Reach, with the area set to become a new leisure destination for the city.

Building contractor Lancer Scott has been appointed to deliver the work on the Bristol buildings, which include the compressor building overlooking the waterfront and Castle Park – and the fermentation buildings along Hawkins Lane. The site has a long history of housing breweries, the latest of which was Courage.

The compressor building's ground floor is being returned to its former use as a fully operational brewery by Left Handed Giant with a brewpub – a modern, "urban-style" bar – set to open in June next year. The development will also include workspace.

Peter Sanchez-Iglesias of Michelin Star restaurant Casamia will take over the first floor with a new restaurant. There will be events space on the second floor.

The newly created office space will be spread over 1,394sq m on the first and second floors of the fermentation buildings that overlook Bristol's Floating Harbour to the north and Temple Cross in the centre of Finzels Reach to the south.

The loft-like space, comes in a range of flexible 230-557sq m office units.

Gavin Bridge, director of Cubex, said: "It's exciting to see the works in full swing now, marking the start of the transformation of these stunning, historic buildings to breathe new life into them. We've had plenty of interest already in both the leisure and office space that we are creating, and we expect to be making some exciting new announcements on this front very soon."

Bridge said the plan is for the leisure space to be a home to an eclectic mix of independent businesses, ranging from a florist, clothing brand, restaurant, gym, hairdressers [and] cafe.

He added: “We expect the offices to make an ideal home for the city's growing businesses.  With a popular weekly street market, vibrant street scene and nearly 2,500 people soon to be living and working in the area, this new community is already starting to emerge as a new destination for the city."

Finzels Reach, 10 minutes walk from Temple Meads station, is being created by south-west England developer Cubex and funded by Palmer Capital.
